Chase the Rainbow

Have you ever literally chased a rainbow? Well, I have! I don’t have any tornados to chase in my neck of the woods, so rainbow chasing is about as exciting as it gets! Haha! My daughter and I have made an agreement that, if at all possible, anytime we see a rainbow we will get in the car and try to drive to the spot that the rainbow is touching the ground. We haven’t succeeded yet, but we will! J

Something about a rainbow just captivates me. Always has. As a child, my favorite movie was the Wizard of OZ and my favorite song, Somewhere Over the Rainbow! I loved every part of Dorothy’s journey. She went to the other side of the rainbow and everything was in color. It was magical! But that didn’t make it easy or void of struggle and danger. But she was persistent and determined to keep following the path in front of her. She kept moving forward until she reached her destination. There is so much we can learn from that children’s story.

This morning, I was preparing to take my daughter to school when I noticed the sprinkles and sunshine. I looked up and there she was! Absolutely radiant! A perfect rainbow in the sky! My first instinct was to get in the car and start driving, but responsibility sounded an alarm and chimed in letting me know that I probably didn’t have time to get my daughter to school in time if I did… Next time! So instead, I went running through the wet grass, flip-flops and all, to find a place where I could capture the beautiful sight! “Steady hands…steady!” I told myself as I took a pano, hoping it would turn out just as glorious as it looked in person! I finished and checked to make sure it had captured well. When I looked up again it was already faded and then moments later…gone!

I had literally stepped outside at just the right moment! I was ecstatic! I knew I had captured something special! But I was also disappointed that it had come and gone so quickly.

We got in the car and started the trek to school. All the while, I kept thinking about that rainbow. How beautiful it was. How it had instantaneously brought joy and excitement to our morning. But I also thought about how I felt as I watched it disappear before my very eyes. I didn’t want it to go. My daughter had barely even been able to see it herself.

But isn’t this how our journey unfolds at times?

God shares a promise with us. Sometimes it is directly from his word. Other times it is one he has spoken to only our hearts. We hear it and we know it is him speaking. We believe. And then we start down the path toward that promise. It isn’t an easy path but it has been prepared for us. And we keep moving forward, overcoming obstacles, meeting new promise-believers along the way. We are on a journey.

Then, when we least expect it, but oftentimes when we need it the most, God sends us a beautiful reminder of that promise! And it is just enough to energize us for the next leg of the journey.

Friends, be encouraged today! God keeps his promises! His word does not return void! Keep believing! Keep moving forward! Chase the Rainbow!
